B Vitamins Beyond B12: What Each One Actually Does

B12 has become shorthand for "energy shot," and it's not wrong — B12 plays a real role in nerve function and red blood cell production, and a lot of patients notice a difference when a genuine gap gets corrected. But B12 is one of eight B vitamins, and treating it as the whole story leaves out most of the picture.

What each B vitamin actually does

B1 (thiamine) and B2 (riboflavin) are part of how your cells convert food into usable energy — not a jolt, just the basic machinery running properly. B3 (niacin) supports that same energy pathway and plays a role in skin health. B5 (pantothenic acid) is involved in hormone production. B6 supports neurotransmitter function — it's part of what regulates mood and sleep chemistry, which is why a real deficiency can show up as fatigue or irritability that looks like something else entirely. Folate (B9) and B12 work together in DNA synthesis and red blood cell formation, which is part of why they're often discussed as a pair rather than separately.

If a B12 shot didn't help, B12 may not be the gap

The practical takeaway: if you've tried a B12 shot and didn't notice much, the answer isn't necessarily "more B12" — it might be that B12 wasn't the actual gap. This is where a real conversation matters more than a menu item. Diet, absorption, medications, and individual health history all affect which of these your body is actually short on, if any.

Why we don't hand these out by default

This is also why we don't hand out vitamin injections as a blanket recommendation. A B-complex approach, IM or IV depending on what's appropriate for you, makes more sense for most patients than isolating B12 alone — but "makes sense for most patients" still isn't the same as "right for you." That's a conversation, not a default.
