What to Expect at Your First IV Infusion

What the infusion itself is like

Once that's settled, you'll be seated comfortably for the infusion itself. A small IV line is placed, typically in the arm, and the fluids are delivered at a controlled rate — not rushed, because delivering nutrients too quickly can cause discomfort, and not so slow that you're sitting longer than necessary. Plan for a minimum of about an hour and a half for your appointment, factoring in the initial check-in, placement, and the infusion itself.

How it feels during

During the infusion, most patients read, work on a phone or laptop, or just relax — it's not an uncomfortable process for the large majority of people, beyond the brief pinch of the IV placement itself. Mild bruising at the injection site is possible afterward, same as with any IV line, and typically resolves within a few days.

How to prepare

Come hydrated and having eaten something beforehand — an empty stomach makes some patients feel lightheaded during or after infusions, and that's an easy thing to avoid. Beyond that, there's no significant prep required.

Afterward

Afterward, most patients feel able to return to normal activity right away. What you notice in terms of results depends heavily on what the infusion was actually addressing and what your baseline levels looked like going in — which is exactly why the conversation before the IV matters as much as the infusion itself.
